A new Harvard-Harris survey reveals that 67% of Americans believe the Biden administration "deliberately" left the southern border effectively open during its tenure.
The poll, conducted July 6-8, 2025, shows strong partisan divides: 84% of Republicans and 68% of independents agree the border was open, while 51% of Democrats claim it was "secure."
When asked whether this open border was a deliberate policy, 69% of respondents said it was intentional, with 88% of Republicans and 60% of independents concurring.
In contrast, 52% of Democrats believe the open border was unintentional.
The survey’s findings point to a deep public skepticism about the Biden administration’s border strategy, with a clear majority convinced the porous border was no accident.
But the polls tell only half the story.

Under President Trump’s second term, the southern border has seen a dramatic transformation, with illegal crossings plummeting to unprecedented levels.
Customs and Border Protection reported zero illegal immigrants released into the U.S. interior in May and June 2025, a sharp departure from the previous administration’s record.

"Zero Border crossings for the month for TRUMP, verses 60,000 for Sleepy, Crooked Joe Biden, a man who lost the 2020 Presidential Election by a 'LANDSLIDE!'" Trump posted last month.
"Biden was grossly incompetent, and the 2020 election was a total FRAUD! The evidence is MASSIVE and OVERWHELMING. A Special Prosecutor must be appointed. This cannot be allowed to happen again in the United States of America! Let the work begin! What this Crooked man, and his CORRUPT CRONIES, have done to our Country in 4 years, is grossly indescribable! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The contrast is striking. In June 2024, under Biden, 27,766 migrants were released into the U.S. interior. By June 2025, Border Patrol recorded just 6,070 illegal crossings at the southern border—a record low.
The White House highlights the difference, noting that during the Biden administration’s peak, approximately 10,000 unvetted migrants crossed daily, most released with minimal oversight.
"It’s a stark contrast to the Biden Administration, when approximately 10,000 unvetted migrants were illegally crossing the southern border every day at the peak of the invasion — most of whom were released into the country with little or no oversight," the White House noted in a June press release.
Biden’s policies, marked by relaxed enforcement and increased paroles, saw illegal crossings surge, overwhelming border facilities and local communities.
Trump’s approach—bolstered by reinvigorated deportation efforts, stricter asylum rules, and enhanced border security—has slashed those numbers to historic lows.
Critics of Biden argue his administration’s policies invited chaos, while supporters claim they prioritized humanitarian concerns.
Trump’s detractors, meanwhile, warn of overly punitive measures, but his base hails the results as a triumph of law and order.
The Harvard-Harris survey captures a nation convinced that Biden’s border was by design unsecured, while Trump’s second term has redefined the immigration landscape with a near-total halt in illegal crossings.
