Google pledged Tuesday to reinstate YouTube channels banned for political speech, including those silenced during the Biden administration's pressure campaign on COVID-19 and election content.

The tech giant's concession, detailed in a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, marks a significant retreat from years of alleged viewpoint discrimination.

Alphabet Inc., Google's parent, submitted the statement in response to subpoenas issued February 15, 2023, and March 6, 2025.

"Reflecting the Company’s commitment to free expression, YouTube will provide an opportunity for all creators to rejoin the platform if the company terminated their channels for repeated violations of COVID-19 and elections integrity policies that are no longer in effect," Daniel F. Donovan, attorney for Alphabet, wrote.

The move could revive accounts for scores of conservatives who have been banned or shadowbanned from the platform, including Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino, former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, and White House counterterrorism chief Sebastian Gorka.

YouTube banned Bongino in 2022 for what it deemed COVID-19 misinformation on masks; he now credits his Rumble success to that ouster.

Bannon and Gorka faced similar permanent removals for election-related content.

Jordan hailed the development as a direct result of Republican oversight.

In a series of X posts, he announced the development.

"BREAKING: Due to our oversight efforts, GOOGLE commits to offer ALL creators previously kicked off YouTube due to political speech violations to return to the platform. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL."

The letter exposes Biden officials' aggressive tactics.

Donovan revealed: "Senior Biden Administration officials, including White House officials, conducted repeated and sustained outreach to Alphabet and pressed the Company regarding certain user-generated content related to the COVID-19 pandemic that did not violate its policies."

He added, "While the Company continued to develop and enforce its policies independently, Biden Administration officials continued to press the Company to remove non-violative user-generated content."

Alphabet deemed the pressure "unacceptable and wrong," noting it created a "political atmosphere that sought to influence the actions of platforms based on their concerns regarding misinformation."

YouTube rolled back its restrictive policies after the Judiciary GOP launched its probe, confirming the administration targeted speech outside platform rules.

Further reforms aim to curb future abuses.

YouTube vows never to employ third-party fact-checkers, echoing Meta's 2024 shift — denounced by then-President Joe Biden as "really shameful."

Instead, the platform experiments with Community Notes, a crowdsourced system pioneered by Elon Musk on X and adopted by Meta.

The letter also blasts European Union regulations as threats to American speech.

"These laws place a disproportionate regulatory burden on American companies, and the Company has long expressed its concern about the risk that the DSA may pose to freedom of expression within and outside of the European Union, depending on how certain provisions may be enforced," Donovan warned. "The DSA could be interpreted in such a way as to require Alphabet and other providers of intermediary services to remove lawful content, jeopardizing the companies' ability to develop and enforce global policies that support rights to free expression and access to information."

Such provisions, he continued, "may open avenues for substantive regulation of lawful speech, including through risk mitigation, the use of codes of conduct and crisis protocols, and the out-of-court dispute settlement mechanism. Alphabet remains mindful of these risks and continues to be vigilant in its defense of these rights."

Jordan framed the disclosures as validation of long-standing GOP accusations.

"Over the past few years, we have uncovered massive scandals relating to Big Tech censorship. During the Biden-Harris years, under White House pressure, YouTube changed its policies to censor political debate on COVID and elections. TODAY, YouTube admits that the censorship pressure from Biden Admin was 'unacceptable and wrong.'"

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg echoed these admissions in an August 2024 letter, confessing: "1. Biden Admin 'pressured' Facebook to censor Americans. 2. Facebook censored Americans. 3. Facebook throttled the Hunter Biden laptop story."

The revelations stem from a broader Republican-led probe into Big Tech's suppression of COVID-19 dissent, 2020 election claims, and Hunter Biden coverage.

Parallel litigation, including the Supreme Court's Murthy v. Missouri case, exposed "jawboning"—government coercion of private firms.

Lower courts labeled it an "Orwellian 'Ministry of Truth,'" though the high court dismissed it on standing grounds.

Recent events underscore ongoing perils.

Jordan vowed persistence: "All the above are MASSIVE wins for the American people, the First Amendment, and freedom. We won’t stop fighting to protect free speech...We will continue to hold Big Tech accountable."
