In a gut-wrenching betrayal of trust, Republican South Carolina State Rep. RJ May, a self-proclaimed defender of children, has admitted to distributing child sex abuse material, exposing a vile hypocrisy beneath his anti-LGBTQ+ crusade.
The man who railed against drag queens and transgender individuals as threats to kids now faces up to 100 years in prison after pleading guilty last Friday, per Newsweek.
Using the alias “joebidennnn69” on the Kik platform, May exchanged 265 files depicting toddlers and young children in sex acts during spring 2024.
Court records reveal he showed a depraved interest in incest and children as young as his own seven-year-old.
Initially denying the charges, May, representing himself without a law degree, sought to dismiss the warrant that uncovered damning evidence from his home, laptop, and devices.
Prosecutors also allege he traveled to Colombia to film himself abusing three underage girls.
"We as legislators have an obligation to ensure that our children have no harm done to them," May declared in a January 2024 House speech on transgender issues.
Yet, his actions tell a different story.
On November 24, 2022, he posted on social media, decrying "exposing children to drag shows and pushing sex changes on toddlers" as "child exploitation."
He also likened Medicaid-funded gender-affirming care to enabling drug addiction, insisting, "We as legislators have an obligation to ensure that our children have no harm done to them."
The irony deepens with Moms for Liberty, an anti-LGBTQ+ group notorious for labeling inclusive children’s books as "pornography" and accusing LGBTQ+ advocates of "grooming."
They honored May as their 2023 Legislator of the Year and featured him at their 2022 "Reclaiming Education in America" event.
Now, their champion stands exposed as a predator.
May’s guilty plea, entered to avoid a trial that would have laid bare the full scope of his crimes, brings penalties of up to $250,000 in fines and mandatory sex offender registration.
Held without bail due to the severity of his offenses — images included children as young as seven — May’s fall from grace serves as a stark reminder: those loudest in their moral posturing often hide the darkest secrets.
