Israel has become the first country to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent sovereign state, more than 30 years after its declaration of independence from Somalia.

In late December 2025, Israel made a controversial move to officially recognize the breakaway state of Somaliland as an independent nation.

Over 30 years ago the region declared independence from Somalia.

Dozens of countries and organizations, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the African Union have condemned the declaration. China joined the criticism with its foreign ministry warning against backing separatist movements for "selfish interests."

The US, however, defended Israel at an emergency UN Security Council meeting, noting that no similar session was held earlier this year when several UN members recognized a Palestinian state.

People raise Somalia's flag in protest Israel's recognition of Somaliland December 30, 2025.

Why would Israel would make such a controversial and bold move 30 years after the regions sessions?

An Israel-Somaliland alliance would strengthen Israel's security by extending its reach into the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, potentially disrupting Iranian proxy operations and providing early warning against threats from Yemen and Iran-backed groups.

The partnership would also expand Israel's intelligence and surveillance capabilities, counter Iranian influence, and improve maritime security without territorial expansion.

This setting a more secure stage for war with Iran.

Further, if the court of public opinion still matters in the US, recent viral report by independent journalist Nick Shirley on Somalian daycare fraud in the US was published the same day as Israel's controversial recognition of Somaliland.

What should also be noted, is the story exposing fraud in Minnesota had already been reported by multiple sources over several years now.

So why was it just now picked up by mainstream media?

The interesting timing expands...

The recent invasion and capture of Venezuela President Maduro also offers what could be a precursor to imminent war with Iran.

Below is a previously published timeline:

For over two decades, Venezuela has functioned as Iran's primary strategic foothold in the western hemisphere.

Through that time the relationship evolved from political alignment to operational cooperation. This cooperation included, sanction evasion, IRGC linked logistics, Hezbollah network expansion, and air corridors between Tehran and Caracas.

The destabilization or overthrowing a Venezuela dismantles the only forward operating base in the Americas.

It significantly weakens Irans asymmetric reach, disrupts, IRGC and Hezbollah networks and reduces Tehran's ability to threaten US interests closer to home.

This having made Venezuela a logical and obvious precursor to any broader confrontation with Iran.
