Slang evolves at such a fast pace that it’s difficult to stay in the loop and get down with the youth when they're popping off with strange new words and phrases.
You may have heard the phrase 'mogging', and if this has left you feeling embarrassed and confused, don't worry, you are not alone. Keep reading as we explain what 'mogging' means and how you can start using it correctly.
What is Mogging?
Mogging refers to a situation in which a person outshines and dominates another person or group of people, typically because they look better or are in better physical form.
Say there's a picture online and If someone appears in a picture you took and is more attractive than you, you've got mogged, and that person is dominant over you.
If you're walking in Venice Beach and take a selfie, trying to look like an Alpha Male, but Arnold Schwarzenegger places himself in your picture and makes you look like an eyesore, you've been mogged.
So, it's internet slang that is used describe someone who surpasses other people, whether in terms of aesthetics, skill, achievement, or reputation.
It appeared on 4chan, quite often a cesspool for these terms, around the late 2010s. A decade later, it gained popularity through TikTok and Instagram, especially within the fitness communities.
But mogging is not only for pictures. It's also for in-real-life situations. You and all the other weaker and less motivated people at the gym have been mogged if Arnold Schwarzenegger comes in and deadlifts 600 pounds right in front of you (he actually did that stuff in his prime) while you're there trying to lift an 11-pound dumbbell.

Put simply, mogging is the act of crudely revealing someone’s inferiority by pure comparison. This example of Mark Zuckerberg mogging everyone else by showing he's simply a better romantic partner is a good example of mogging without the looks:
this man is absolutely relationship-mogging everyone like wdym you made your own acoustic version of Get Low for your wife !! pic.twitter.com/FGHiFbTLmE

Mogging Term Origin: Where Does Mogging Come From?
Apparently, mogging evolved from the acronym AMOG, or Alpha Male of the Group. Allegedly, users on 4chan used the acronym AMOG to refer to a person who, in a picture, was clearly more imposing, muscular, and better looking than the people around him. He was, well, the AMOG.
We can't tell if this origin story is accurate or just made up and regurgitated, but it tracks. A 4chan user would react and say "He's AMOGging" when seeing such a snapshot.
When can you use Mogging? Examples of Mogging in a Sentence
You can use the word mogging in a phrase if you're posing in someone else's picture and making them look skinny or ridiculous. You can also use it if it happened the other way around.
If you took a picture with your girlfriend and a shirtless, fitter guy passed by and stole the photograph (and your girl's attention), then your friends would roast you and say:
"You've been totally mogged."
Or you can also brag about mogging someone else.
"I can't go to the gym anymore because I'll mog everyone with my physique."
If someone also shows off their better social status or bank account in front of you, they might mog you with that.
"This guy is mogging me in front of my date. I'm driving a Honda that I worked hard to buy, and he's riding in a Porsche."
What are some Kinds of Mogging?
Mogging expanded to other communities and other forms of superiority. Here is a collection of the most popular mogging types:
- Heightmogging: A heightmog occurs when a mogger is taller than the moggee. The bigger the height difference, the more unforgiving is the heightmog.
- Fashionmogging: The mogger has to wear more stylish and clothes than the mogee, outshining them.
- Jawmogging: Believe it or not, this a very popular one. Looksmaxxing, mewing — countless guys are obsessed with jawmogging. The mogger has a more masculine and chisleed jawline, often accentuated with a trimmed beard, consequently mogging the man with the rounder jaw.
- Brutal Mogging: Here, the mogger mogs the moggee on multiple fields simultaneously, such as height, style, jaw, physique, and others. Think of Beyoncé or Henry Cavill.
- Mog Battle: During Mog Battles, pairs or groups of users ask others to compare them and vote on who is the mogger that takes the crown. Many do it through videos or social media threads.
Mogging can also apply to animals or even inanimate objects, using the same categories described earlier
How to Mog Everyone
Not to say that you should go around putting others down to lift your ego, but here are a few things to try to make you feel like one of the very best. These tips work for men and women alike:
- Eat healthy: A balanced diet and good eating habits can improve your health and your build.
- Sleep well, keep active, get strong: You’re not going to attract many with purple bags under your eyes and sluggish movements. Instead, make sure you get lots of rest and work out to stay fit.
- Earn your buck: You're not hideous, you're just poor. If you would rather not get mogged and mog people instead, start making money. If you take a selfie with a broken-down 2010 cell phone that has a 128p camera, you'll get mogged automatically.
- Take care of your hygiene: You need to groom yourself.
- Work on your confidence and charisma: There is nothing more attractive than someone who is confident in their own body, a joy to be around, and who, most importantly, doesn’t bully others to get what they want.
And, last but not least, stop comparing yourself to others! Seriously. Happinessmogging may not be a thing yet, but don't let meaningless comparisons ruin your self-esteem and your contentment. You can mog everyone simply by being you. Actually, the ultimate for of mogging is not even knowing that you're mogging everyone else.
